Professional background:
Of Anglo-Irish origin, Monica FAGAN was born in Sheffield (GB ) and came to France at the age of 18 to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Rennes.
Exhibitions and galleries in France and in Europe on Imaginary and Fantastic Painting.
President of "Barbizon: Painters of Today" from 1987 to 1991.
Since 1994, he has had a permanent exhibition of his work at the Museum of Imaginative Art in Château de Ferrières, Seine-et-Marne.
Creation of costumes and opera sets.
Artistic approach:
Monica Fagan's oil paintings are steeped in fantastic and dreamlike Surrealism. The artist resonates deeply with the Pre-Raphaelite and Surrealist Symbolist painters for their rich imagination. She draws from the past the perfection of a solid pictorial technique that she puts at the service of a work that is both contemporary and timeless.
Women, their part in the world, in History, Art and Opera take a very significant place in her work.
A world of contrasts and contradictions, virginity and fertility, symbolism and sensuality. To enter this world, we must leave our masks by the water and take the keys it offers - invitations to penetrate and seek what it jealously conceals. But we are not alone. The painting is inhabited. Shapes and objects become human. Musical instruments, rocks, stones and trees become female figures. It describes the passage of matter through water and the chessboard, a symbol of light and darkness...duality and ambiguity...through shadow to eternal light.
The passage of time is also one of her interests: she creates fantastic flora and fauna that claim their place in the Cycle of Life. Everything points to the fact that Man never holds the key to power or to the future, Man only passes, time is eternal... like the ivy that often invades her paintings, a symbol of the Cycle of Life.
